A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

Alien Breed, developed and published by Team17 in 1991 was one of the Amiga's defining top-down shooters. XenoBlight rebuilds that game (and its 1992 Special Edition follow-up) from the ground up for modern systems: real dynamic lighting, full stereo positional audio, smooth twin-stick controls, and true split-screen co-op with online support while keeping a Classic mode that plays like the disks you remember (no promises, this isn't an emulator).

XenoBlight is an engine, not a copy of the game. Point it at your own legally owned Alien Breed disk images (IPF) and it imports the sprites, levels, and audio straight from them. Nothing from the original game ships in this download, and no artwork or audio comes from an AI generator. The code from the project is 100% AI other than when from a library.

Titles

  • Alien Breed: Special Edition (1992) - beta
  • Alien Breed (1991) - alpha
  • Alien Breed II and Tower Assault are planned; their rows are visible but greyed until their importers land.

Features

  • Classic toggles: a transcription of the original. Play with original resolution, HUD, audio and controls.
  • Modern toggles: go further and add twin-stick  controls, online play, real occlusion lighting, full stereo positional audio and more graphics settings. Most of these are individually optional.
  • Widescreen support with modern frame rates, high-resolution or play with the original resolution pillarboxed.
  • Three control schemes: Classic, Twin-Stick, and Retreat (Tower Assault's walk-backwards-while-aiming scheme)
  • True split-screen co-op with online: the original locked both players to one shared screen; XenoBlight gives each player their own. Network co-op with rollback netcode is also supported.

Requirements

  • Windows 64-bit.
  • Linux (Intel or AMD, x86-64) 64-bit, glibc 2.35 or later (Ubuntu 22.04 or later).
  • Linux (64-bit ARM, arm64) glibc 2.35 or later (Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm or later, 64-bit; Ubuntu 22.04 or later). Start with the xenoblight script at the top of the folder, not the binary under bin/.

  • Graphics: OpenGL 2.1 or OpenGL ES 2 with shader support.

IMPORTANT

This is a bring-your-own-media release. You need your own legally obtained Alien Breed disk images in IPF format (.ipf). Raw .adf dumps are not supported. Unzip XenoBlight to a folder, drop your disk images in beside the executable, and run it — no installer, no separate import step. The launcher scans the folder, tells you what it found, and imports whichever titles are ready to play.

XenoBlight is a fan-made engine and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Team17 Digital Ltd. "Alien Breed" is Team17's trademark; this project ships none of their content.
